Carroll D. Steinbeck, 96, of Fairfield, formerly of Rubio, died late Monday, Oct. 12, 2020, at the Jefferson County Health Center. He was born Nov. 27, 1923, to A.J. "Steamer" and Vera Fleig Steinbeck at the family home in Rubio and his lifetime home. Carroll attended grade school in Rubio and graduated from Richland High School in 1942, where he was very active in all sports. He attended one year at the University of Iowa. then entered the U.S. Army in May 1943. During World Two, he served in France as a 60mm mortar gunner in a rifle company.

Carroll returned in April 1946 and married Evelyn Burton of Richland. They moved to Iowa City and he finished school, graduating in 1948. Upon graduation they returned to Rubio, where Carroll joined his father in the business of selling and servicing Chevrolet cars, trucks and Allis Chalmers farm equipment. He retired and closed the business after 43 years.

Carroll joined the Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity, was Scoutmaster of Richland Troop 56, was a charter member of the Richland Lions Club, was a 50-year member of the Richland Masonic Lodge No. 38, served for 30 years on the Washington County Conservation Board and as chairman for most of that time. He was a Clay Township Trustee for many years, member of Richland American Legion Post No. 504, board member of Rubio Savings Bank of Brighton and the Washington Federation Bank for many years, and was an avid hunter and fisherman. He and his family spent time in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area in Northern Minnesota each Fall for many years and truly loved the outdoors. He was a member of the NRA, Ducks Unlimited, Fairfield Camping Club and the Fairfield Square Dance Club.

Carroll is survived by his son, James (Ginny Hughes) of Fairfield; two granddaughters, Devon Steinbeck and Sommer Lyons (Roger), both of Fairfield; two grandsons, Aric Steinbeck (Dawn) of Highland, Ill., and Lucas Steinbeck (Davina) of Eureka, Mo.; six great-grandsons, Mason, Owen, Quinn, JJ, Roark and Jackson Jay; and one great-granddaughter, Eliza.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Evelyn; one son, Steven; brother, Kenneth; and his loving 10-year companion, Katheryn "Kay" Clarridge.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, at the Richland United Methodist Church with the Rev. Harlan Van Voorst officiating. Burial will be in Richland Friends Cemetery with military honors by Richland American Legion Post No. 504. Open visitation will be held at Gould Funeral Home in Richland beginning at 4 p.m. Friday and with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorials to the Richland Methodist Church, Friends Cemetery or the Rubio Community Building may be left at the Funeral Home, Church or mailed to Jim at 2151 Greenbrier Circle, Fairfield, IA 52556. Due to continuing COVID-19 concerns, social distancing and masks are recommended.
