Catherine Elizabeth Millane was born on Nov. 25, 1925, on a farm Northwest of Richland. She was the oldest daughter of Richard J. and Margaret Reed Horras. She attended the one room country school No.10 for her early education, which happened to be the same school that her mother attended. Catherine went on to Richland High School, where she was a part of the graduation Class of 1943. Upon graduation, she pursued her passion for nursing at St. Joseph's Hospital School of Nursing in Ottumwa, Iowa. Catherine graduated as a registered nurse in 1946 and began a devoted career in nursing. Much of her time was spent working in Veterans Hospitals in Des Moines, Iowa City and Omaha. Catherine was united in marriage to Joseph Millane on Aug. 22, 1970, at the Mother Cabrini Church in Richland, Iowa. Together, they farmed North of Fairfield until Joe's death in October 2015. Catherine always had a heart for helping others and spent almost 40 years volunteering at Parkview Care Center in Fairfield. She had a gift for art, and enjoyed ceramics, oil paintings and crafting. She looked forward to a trip to the casino, a good game of Bingo or a chance to go fishing. Catherine was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Fairfield as well as the Cadet Nurse Corps.
Catherine was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Mary Hoekstra; a brother, Bob Horras and twin brothers in infancy.
Left to share her story is her brother, Richard (Karen) Horras of Richland, Iowa, and sister, Carol Greene of Williamsport, Penn., as well as many extended family and friends.
