Cecil E. Nichols, 88, of 1428 Old Highway 34, Mt. Pleasant died at 10:10 a.m. Friday, April 21, 2000 at the Pleasant Manor Care Center.
The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 25, at the Weir Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant with the Rev. Edward R. Peterson officiating. Interment will be held at 2:45 p.m. Tuesday, April 25 at the Kahoka Cemetery in Kahoka, Mo. with the Rev. Earnest Deatrick officiating. Visitation will be held until 8:30 p.m. this evening at the Weir Funeral Home. There will be no family visitation at the funeral home. A memorial has been established to Alzheimer's Research.
Mr. Nichols was born April 24, 1911, at Williamstown, Mo., the son of William E. and Lydia McClain Nichols. He married Mildred L. Fountain on June 6, 1934 in Nauvoo, Ill. A 1932 graduate of Williamstown, Mo. High School, he graduated from Culver-Stockton College in Canton, Mo. with a B.A. degree in Education in 1942. To help pay his tuition, he taught school and attended classes. He taught rural school near Williamstown for six years, at Wyconda, Mo., for three years and at schools in Farmington and Richland. He taught 18 years in New London. He retired after 28 years as a Mormon Feed salesman in the Southeast Iowa area. He was an avid golfer and a past member of the Mt. Pleasant Golf and Country Club. He helped maintain the grounds when the groundskeeper needed help. He constructed and mowed his own small golf course next to his home.
Survivors include his wife of rural Mt. Pleasant; two sons, William Nichols of rural Mt. Pleasant and Dr. Richard Nichols of Bastrop, La.; one sister, Fern Gudehus of Edina, Mo.; 10 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son, Robert E. Nichols; six brothers, Lloyd, Leland, Leo, Ruben, Charles and Thomas; and one sister, Gladys Mitchell.
