Charles Edward Johnson
Charles Edward Johnson, 82 of Mt. Pleasant, died Friday, Nov. 29, 2002 at the Henry County Health Center in Mt. Pleasant.
A graveside service was held this morning at 11 a.m., at the Prairie Grove Cemetery near West Burlington, with Pastor Jeff Crawford officiating. Burial with full military rites followed at the cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established to the American Diabetes Association or to the American Heart Association in his memory.
Mr. Johnson was born May 16, 1920 in Sperry, Iowa, the son of Fred and Augusta Wilson Johnson. He grew up in Sperry and attended school there. At the age of 19, he entered the United States Navy and served six years in the service during World War II. On June 6, 1945, he married Ruth Mary Splonskowski in Klamath Falls, Ore. Mr. Johnson farmed for many years in the White Oak area. He engaged in a lot of custom work for various farmers and served as a volunteer handyman in the White Oak community. He retired in 1990. He was of the Protestant faith, and had served on the White Oak School Board. He enjoyed visiting with truckers on the CB radio. He also liked to travel, especially driving the back roads and enjoying the countryside.
Survivors include his wife; three sons, Edward Johnson of Burlington, Fred and his wife Peggy Johnson of West Burlington, and Bob Johnson of Mt. Pleasant; three daughters, Mary and her husband Curt Wigger of Amana, Shirley and her husband Faron Springer of Las Vegas, Nev. and Karen Johnson of Nashville, Tenn.; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers, Bill Johnson, Fred Johnson, Carl Johnson and Roy Johnson.
