Chuck was born on July 27, 1935, near Walnut Hill, Illinois, the son of Kelly Otis and Opal Marie (Cameron) Satterfield. He graduated from Manlius High School in 1953. Following high school, Chuck was drafted into the United States Army where he served honorably from 1954 until 1956. After knowing his future wife since the age of four and dating her throughout high school, Chuck was united in marriage to Donna Lee Johnson on July 20, 1956, in Prophetstown.
Chuck began his career working on his dad’s farm in Illinois. He later worked for Archer Aircraft Oil and moved to Washington in 1966. Chuck and Donna owned and operated the Washington Coast to Coast Store for 15 years until his retirement in 1984.
Chuck was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Washington. He was a past member of the Noon Kiwanis Club, lifetime member of the National Rifle Association, served on the Board of the Washington Chamber of Commerce and was a Board of Director at Federal Savings and Loan for many years. Chuck belonged to the Winga’s Coffee Club where he was Past President. Following retirement, Chuck and Donna travelled many miles in their three motorhomes, covering a lot of North America. They drove north, east, and west as far as the public roads would take them and as far south as they could in the good ol’ USA. They “fulltimed” for seven years and spent many winters in Louisiana, Alabama and Texas avoiding the Iowa winters. They volunteered in many State Parks, U.S. Fish and Wildlife refuges and National Wildlife refuges. They made friends from all over the country. Chuck never met a stranger!
He is survived by his wife, Donna Satterfield of Washington, Iowa; daughter Loree (Ken) Stogdill of rural Crawfordsville, Iowa; daughter, Krista Kessell of Washington, Iowa; grandchildren: Elizabeth Steele and son Zayden Liles of Lone Tree, Iowa; Paul Steele of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Taylor (Mandi) Stogdill and their daughters Tayte, Rylee and Jaelyn of rural Mt. Pleasant, Iowa; Kelly (Kenzie) Stogdill and their children Nolan, Corbin and Lucy of rural Washington, Iowa; as well as bonus granddaughter, Jamie (Steve) Schlee and their children Kelsi, Austin, Cooper and Maxwell of Farmersburg, Iowa. He is also survived by sister-in-law, Lyla (Tom) Lindquist of Maryville, Tennessee, and was known as “Uncle Chuck” to many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Wilma Scott and her husband Fred; mother and father-in-law, Oral and George Johnson; son-in-law, John Kessell; and sister-in-law, Beverly Johnson.
The family is grateful for the care that Chuck received from both the staff at Halcyon House and Hospice of Washington County.
