CHARLES HERBERT QUAYLE JR.
Mount Pleasant
Charles Herbert Quayle Jr., 74, of Mount Pleasant, passed away Monday, May 25, 2020, at his home surrounded by his family after a courageous battle with prostate cancer.
Herb was born Aug. 1, 1945, in Fairfield, Iowa, the son of Charles Herbert and Irma Marie (Frueh) Quayle Sr. He was a graduate of Fairfield High School in the Class of 1965. He was united in marriage to Jackie Lorain Zuercher on Dec. 12, 1970, at the Green Mound Church of God in rural Trenton, Iowa. Herb owned and operated Quayle's Auto Service of Trenton from 1968 until his retirement in 2018 after 50 years. He drove a school bus and was a mechanic for the Mount Pleasant Community School District from 1969 until he retired in 2020 after 51 years. He delivered school buses across the United States for Dale Klopfenstein, Max Leichty and Blue Bird Midwest for many years. He played softball for the Trenton team for five years.
Herb enjoyed mowing the acreage on his John Deere, camping and fishing. He loved to travel the United States, Mexico, Canada and Morocco. He loved spending time at Midwest Old Threshers of Mount Pleasant and drove a bus for the many visitors attending the reunion. He enjoyed taking his family on trips, such as going to the Farm Progress Show in Iowa and Illinois, attending car shows and trade fairs, but most of spending time with his family. He was a member of the Trenton United Methodist Church.
Herb received an award for the oldest tire machine in the United States still in use in 1997, at the Las Vegas Tire Convention in which he received a new tire machine. He never knew a stranger and enjoyed attending events of children and grandchildren. Herb knew a lot of the history for Henry, Van Buren and Jefferson counties, along with the history of the school bus drivers of Mount Pleasant.
He is survived by his wife, Jackie of Mount Pleasant; his children, Tammy Jo (Joseph) Ireland of Mount Pleasant and Bobby Eugene (Hope) Quayle of the country of Cyprus; and his grandchildren, Megan Ireland and Erin Ireland of Mount Pleasant, Ethan Quayle, Elizabeth Quayle and Sara Quayle, all of the country of Cyprus.
Herb was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, his brother, Bobby Quayle, and his sisters, Shirley Quayle and Marsha Quayle.
According to his wishes, cremation has been entrusted to the care of Murphy Funeral Home of Mount Pleasant. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at a later date. Murphy Funeral Home of Mount Pleasant is handling the arrangements.
