Charles "J.R." Relfe, age 40, of Washington, Iowa, died Tuesday, March 9, 2021, at the University of Iowa Hospitals following a sudden illness.

Family will receive friends from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. on Saturday, March 13, 2021, at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home. Interment will be private. A general memorial has been established. Charles Rowland James Relfe Jr. was born January 26, 1981, in Wahoo, Nebraska, the son of Charles Rowland James Relfe Sr. and Susan K. (Tweedy) Relfe. J.R. attended school in Washington, Iowa, and graduated from Washington High School in 1999. He was united in marriage to Cena O'Hanlon on July 3, 2002, in Las Vegas, Nevada.

J.R. previously resided in Nebraska and Texas, moving to Washington in 1989. While in high school, he worked at Wingas Cafe and later worked for Hy-Vee Food Store for 12 years. J.R. enjoyed bowling, playing pool and remote-control cars. He was an avid Chicago Cubs fan.

He is survived by his wife, Cena Relfe of Washington, IA; mother, Susan Pfannebecker of Keota, IA; sister, Stephanie Sherman of Cedar Rapids, IA; sister, Emily Ann Rosenbaum and husband Zach of Keota, IA; 7 nieces and nephews; and parents-in-law, Chris and Cathryn O'Hanlon.

He was preceded in death by his father, Charles Relfe, Sr.; stepfather, Rick Pfannebecker; maternal grandparents, Harold and Arbutus Tweedy; paternal grandfather, Jesse Relfe and wife Sissy; Paternal grandmother, Virginia Thrash and her husband, Melvin; and two nieces, Baily and Ruby Rosenbaum.
