Charles William 'Bill' Matkin
Charles William "Bill" Matkin, 67, of Fairfield died peacefully at 6:00 a.m., Wednesday, December 14, 2005, at his home, after a long fight against cancer.
A memorial service will be held at the Maharishi Middle School Auditorium (a structure that he designed) on Sunday, December 18, 2005 at 2:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please send memorials to Hospice of Central Iowa at 204 S Jefferson St, Ste 103, Mt Pleasant, IA 52641. Bill was born February 26, 1938 in Empress, Alberta, Canada, the son of Frederick George Matkin and Sylvia Scott Matkin. He married Frances Marilyn Magwood on July 13, 1963 in Vancouver, British Columbia.
Bill ran his own structural engineering firm, C.W. Matkin Engineering, in Fairfield and designed many buildings in and around Iowa and other states, including a considerable percentage of all the Sthapatyavedic structures in the US. His most memorable local projects and those he was most proud of include the steeple on the Jefferson County Courthouse, completed in 2004, and five of the bridges in the Jefferson County Loop Trails.
Bill was known for his iconoclastic sense of humor, his deep generosity and his love of life. His lasting presence will be remembered by his many wonderful friends.
He is survived by his loving family: Frances Matkin of Fairfield; Marilyn, David and Serenity Todt of Fairfield; Michael Matkin of Brooklyn, NY; Charles, Lisa, Tatiana and Ian Matkin of Garrison, NY; and Elisabeth and Nathan Matkin Sullins of San Francisco, CA.
