Clarence Sandersfeld

Clarence Sandersfeld, 83, died Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2000, at Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls, S.D.

      The funeral service will be 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 2, at St. Matthew?s Lutheran Church in Worthington, Minn., with the Rev. Donald Porter officiating. Visitation will be Sunday, Oct. 1, from 2 to 5 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Benson Funeral Home in Worthington. Burial will be in the Harrison Township Cemetery near May City.

      Mr. Sandersfeld was born April 21, 1917, in Osceola County, the son of Claus and Wilhelmina Mielke Sandersfeld. He married Helen Cole on April 19, 1942, in Spencer. They farmed until 1946 when they moved to Ocheyedan and opened a blacksmith and welding shop. In 1951 they moved to Worthington where he worked for Ruder Construction and later was foreman and designer for Sorenson Aircraft. He received his GED in 1966 and attended Kirkwood College in Cedar Rapids, also working for Wilson Packing. In 1969 he returned to Worthington and worked for Armour?s as a mechanic, retiring when the company closed. He was a member of the Walther League and the choir at St. John?s Lutheran Church in May City. In Ocheyedan, he was a youth leader, Sunday School teacher, and treasurer for St. Peter?s Lutheran Church. At St. Matthew?s Lutheran Church in Worthington, he taught Sunday school, was Zone President of the Layman?s League and a member of the Couples? Club. He was also a member of the Early Kiwanis and Toastmasters, and sang with the Noblemen Chorus.

      Survivors include his wife; a son, Arlo Sandersfeld of Mt. Pleasant; a daughter, Carol Joy Culver of Worthington; three sisters, Dorothy Mohr of Worthington and Laura Sandersfeld and Esther Mohr of May City; three grandsons and one granddaughter. He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Bernard Sandersfeld, a brother, Alfred Sandersfeld, and one grandson.
