Clyde Leroy Cornelius, 95, of Washington, Iowa, formerly of Warsaw, Missouri, passed from this life on Tuesday, February 1, 2022, at the Halcyon House in Washington following a lengthy illness.
Celebration of life services will be held at a later date. Interment services for Clyde and Doris will be held at the Elm Grove Cemetery at a later date. Memorials have been established for the Halcyon House Good Samaritan Fund. The Jones & Eden Funeral Home is assisting with arrangements. Clyde was born, January 23, 1927, in Stewartsville, Missouri, the son of Charles and Maggie (Barron) Cornelius. He was raised on the family farm in rural Stewartsville and graduated from Stewartsville High School in 1944. Clyde served honorably in the United States Coast Guard from January of 1945 until May of 1946. He was united in marriage to Doris Shadduck on April 10, 1948, in Hughesville, Missouri.
Clyde worked for Guy's Foods for 31 years. He started as a route salesman in Kansas City in 1948. He was warehouseman in St. Joseph, Missouri, in 1953, and was made supervisor of the Northwest Missouri Territory in 1962. In 1964, he became Manager of the Des Moines, Iowa territory. Clyde retired from Guy's in 1979 and worked for Brenton Bank in Urbandale, Iowa, as a courier and groundskeeper until 1990. He was also an ordained minister and pastored a Baptist Church in Hopkins, Missouri, from 1957-1959. Clyde and Doris retired to Warsaw, Missouri, in 1990, where he served as a deacon and also put in many volunteer hours doing building and grounds maintenance for First Baptist Church and New Home Baptist Church. Clyde and Doris moved to Washington, Iowa, in 2017, to be closer to family.
Clyde enjoyed working outdoors, mowing on his John Deere, landscaping, and growing beautiful flowers and vegetables.
He is survived by his son, Dennis (Helen) Cornelius of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; daughter, Connie (Chuck) Atwood of Washington, Iowa; daughter, Sheryl (Lee) Peitzman of Auburn, Indiana; son, Gary (Karen) Cornelius of Cumming, Iowa; son, Forrest (Jan) Cornelius of Cedar Falls, Iowa; nine grandchildren, Phil Cornelius, Alison Lounsbery, Marc Atwood, Lesa Roemke, Hilary Martin, Mynette Carlson, Misty Cornelius, Chris Cornelius and Erin Cornelius-Frushour; 11 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Ardra Brodale of Berkeley, California.
Clyde was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Doris; daughter-in-law, Alice Cornelius; grandson, Bradley Wayne Peitzman; granddaughter-in-law, Donna Cornelius; granddaughter-in-law, Peggy Cornelius; and nine siblings, Elbert Jr. Glenn, Lloyd, Mary Morton, Harold, Dale, Lee, Wayne and William.
