Coletta Mae Schimmelpfennig, 88, of Fairfield, IA, passed away on Wednesday, December 28, 2022, at the Good Samaritan Society in Ottumwa, IA.
Funeral services will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 3, 2023, at the Cranston Family Funeral Homes new location, 2805 West Burlington Ave, Fairfield, IA, with Pastor Tom Shipley officiating. Burial will be held in the Packwood Cemetery immediately following the service. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 3, 2023, and last until the time of service. Memorial contributions in Coletta's honor may be directed to the Packwood Cemetery Association. Friends may leave online condolences at www.cranstonfamilyfuneralhome.com.
Coletta Mae Schimmelpfennig was born on September 23, 1934, to Clarence and Magdalene Clark Garrels. She attended Linby Rural School as well as Packwood before graduating from Eldon High School. On September 7, 1952, she was united in marriage to Gerald Schimmelpfennig. The two became the loving parents of two daughters, LuAnne and Diana. Coletta and Gerald later divorced but remained devoted parents to their children. Later in life, Coletta went on to become a nurse’s aide and spent many years working at the Parkview Care Center in Fairfield. Colleta was a talented gardener and enjoyed canning what she grew in her garden. She was a gifted cook and baker making wonderful dishes for family events. Colleta enjoyed music, especially Elvis Presley and was a fan of John Wayne. She cherished any time she was able to spend surrounded by family. She will be deeply missed.
Coletta was preceded in death by her parents; three siblings, James Garrels, Larry Garrels and Sherry Bower, as well as one son-in-law, Allen Jones.
Left to honor her memory are her two daughters, LuAnne Jones of Batavia, IA, and Diana (Bill) Graham of Lyons, NE; four grandchildren, Josh Hoover, Jacob (Sarah) Graham, Jared (Gabriela) Graham and John (Hannah) Graham; ten great-grandchildren, Kailee, Alissa, Bria, Brooke, Addelyn, Matthew, Elijah, Olivia, Sienna and Jasper; six siblings, Ulala Conger, Bernard Garrels, Clark Garrels, Clarence Garrels Jr., Ronald Garrels and William Garrels; two stepsiblings, Cindy Nau and Butch Smith; as well as many extended family and friends.
