D. Daryl “Dusty” Owens, age 88, of Washington, Iowa, passed away Friday, October 18, 2024.
Celebration of life services will be held 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, October 23, 2024, at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home, with Pastor Steve English officiating. Calling hours will begin 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, October 22, 2024, at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home, where the family will be present to receive friends from 5:00 -7:00 p.m. that evening. Interment will follow at the Cambrian Cemetery in rural Louisa County. Memorials have been established for Blank Children’s Hospital Littlest Bookworms in memory of Harlyn Dusty Holtgrewe or the Washington County Fair Association. Daryl was born May 22, 1936, in rural Louisa County, Iowa, the son of Russell and Dorothy (Knott) Owens. He attended Ainsworth Schools, graduating from Ainsworth High School in 1954. Following his graduation, Daryl served honorably in the United States Army and later in the Army Reserves.
Daryl was united in marriage to Patricia A. Fisher on July 5, 1958, at the United Methodist Church of Crawfordsville. Together, Daryl and Pat lived south of Cotter, Iowa; in Crawfordsville, Iowa; and east of Ainsworth, Iowa; before moving to Washington in 1993. Daryl farmed in Crawfordsville before moving to the family farm east of Ainsworth. He drove a school bus for Columbus Community School District for several years. After retirement from farming he kept busy with a few different jobs most recently Integrity Builders. He was a member of the Washington County Pork Producers and served a number of years on the Production Credit Association as a board member.
Daryl loved hosting neighborhood basketball games in his machine shed and family softball games in the yard. He enjoyed showing hogs at the open shows at Washington and Louisa County Fairs, and at the Iowa State Fair. Daryl was an avid Iowa Hawkeyes fan, and loved watching sports on television with the love of his life and best friend for 64 years.
He is survived by his son, Mike (Teresa) Owens of Mt. Pleasant, IA; daughter, Lynn (Craig) Wright of Brighton, IA; daughter, Kim (Jeff) Hazelett of Washington, IA; daughter, Wendy (Ted) Greiner of Keota, IA; nine grandchildren: Stacy (Jared) Holtgrewe, Rachel (Chris) Watters, Amanda (Tyler) Russell, Macy (Chris) Hallinan, Brett (Hayley) Wright, Tyler Hazelett (Grace Van Patten), Austin Hazelett, Garrett Greiner, and Ella Greiner; as well as eight great-grandchildren.
Daryl was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Pat, in 2022; great-granddaughter, Harlyn Dusty Holtgrewe; brothers, Dean and Marlin Owens; and sisters, Wanita Zieglowsky, Joyce Campbell, and Meda Fulton.
