DAN "GOOD GUY" MERTENS

Dan "Good Guy" Mertens, age 77, of Mt. Pleasant, IA, passed away Friday, April 9, 2021, at Sunnybrook Assisted Living in Mt. Pleasant.

Dan was born September 3, 1943, in Mt. Pleasant, to Henry and Marguerite (Burns) Mertens. He graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School in 1963 and attended St. Ambrose College. On June 1, 1973, he married Katie Mathes in Burlington. A lifelong resident of Mt. Pleasant, Dan farmed, worked in construction, was a real estate agent and travel agent and retired after 20 years as a rural mail carrier in 2007. He was a member of Whitetails Unlimited, the Knights of Columbus and the Moose Lodge and enjoyed golfing, annual deer hunts, Thursday night Bible study, snow skiing, scenic drives and traveling.

Survivors include his wife, Katie; three children, Marcy (Randy) Stroud of Mt. Pleasant, David Mertens of Mt. Pleasant and John (Laura) Mertens of Portland, Oregon; nine grandchildren; and sister, Mary Jo Mertens (James Judy) of Wever.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

A Memorial Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 14, at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, with Father Paul Connolly officiating. Burial will be at Oakland Mills Cemetery. Visitation will be held starting at 9:00 a.m. until the time of the service at the church.
