DAVENPORT ? Danny Chester Cherryholmes, 72, of Davenport, died Wednesday, April 6, 2011, at his home following a battle with cancer.
Funeral services to celebrate his life will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 16, at Berean Baptist Church in Davenport with the Rev. Mark Baker and the Rev. Kerry Hatfield officiating. Burial will be at 3 p.m. Saturday in Crawfordsville Cemetery in Crawfordsville. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Halligan McCabe DeVries Funeral Home in Davenport, with an Eastern Star service at 6:30 p.m. and a Masonic service to follow. There will be additional visitation from 9 until 9:45 a.m. Saturday at the church. Memorials may be made to Berean Baptist Church or to Beacon of Hope Hospice.
Mr. Cherryholmes was born April 21, 1938, in Crawfordsville, the son of Telma and Chester Cherryholmes. He married Arlene York of Washington in 1958. She preceded him in death in 2003. He married Beverly Bain on Dec. 18, 2004.
He retired from Ralston Purina (now Nestle) on May 1, 1999, after 40 years of service. He was a member of Fraternal Lodge 221. He kept active in the Order of the Eastern Star, Davenport Chapter 178. He was an adult advisor for the Order of Rainbow for girls in Iowa and Minnesota. He was a Rainbow dad, receiving the Grand Cross of Colors Award, and was State of Iowa Projects chairman for many years. He enjoyed bowling for 37 years. He was a Hawkeye fan and enjoyed NASCAR races. He also enjoyed traveling with his wife Beverly and the time they spent together. He was very proud of his grandchildren and didn?t miss too many of their football, baseball or soccer games, swimming meets or track meets. He was especially proud of the fact that seven of his 10 grandchildren and step-grandchildren are currently attending college, with one already graduated. His two youngest grandchildren are in junior high and grade school.
Surviving are his wife Beverly; three children, Gail Conyers and husband Kirk of Blair, Neb., Kent Cherryholmes and wife Sue of Davenport, and Kari Hoag and husband Dean of Manheim, Pa.; three stepchildren, John Bain and wife Andrea of Bettendorf, Joan DeMoss and husband Bruce of Blue Grass, and Joe Bain of Davenport; eight grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his first wife; his parents; and two siblings in infancy.
