Darlene Vivian Wells, 74, of Batavia, died Monday, March 23, 2009, at Washington Care Center in Washington.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, March 27, at Behner Funeral Home in Fairfield with the Rev. Thomas Shipley officiating. Burial will be in Batavia Cemetery. Family visitation will be from 9 a.m. until the time of the service Friday in the funeral home. The family requests memorials to be made in lieu of flowers to the Batavia Library or the Batavia Cemetery.
Mrs. Wells was born Jan. 30, 1935, in Fairfield, to Ernest and Merle Marie (Martin) Hartley. She married Donald Wells in Fairfield on Feb. 15, 1963. He preceded her in death on Oct. 8, 2008.
She was raised in the Glasgow area and worked from the mid-1950s to the mid-1960s at Universal Producing Company. After her marriage, she and her husband made their home in Batavia. She was librarian at the Batavia Public Library from the early 1970s until 1976 and then continued to serve as a backup librarian through the 1980s. She worked as a cook at Cardinal Elementary School in Batavia from 1976 until it closed in 1984. She and her husband enjoyed fishing, gardening and traveling, and especially enjoyed working on crafts together. She sewed and crocheted and helped with painting the items.
Surviving are two sons, John Wells of Batavia, and David Wells and wife Jodi of Batavia; one granddaughter; and one sister, Irene Filson of Birmingham.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.
