Darold Powers

DES MOINES ? Darold L. Powers, 80, of Des Moines, died Tuesday, March 15, 2016, due to complications of Parkinson?s disease.

Mr. Powers was born April 18, 1935, in Letts.

He spent most of his childhood in Washington. He graduated from Washington High School in 1952. He earned his bachelor?s degree from the University of Iowa, and a Doctor of Philosophy degree from New York University. His professional career included work as a journalist and social work, as well as many years with the U.S. Department of Labor and the State of Iowa. Among many other accomplishments, he authored several books, designed and built an electric car, and took an active role in Iowa politics. In retirement, he became an avid photographer and a strong advocate for the rights of older Iowans. He was a lifelong sports enthusiast and a loyal fan of the Chicago Cubs, Bears, and Bulls.

Surviving are one sister, Ruth Gardner of Washington; and one brother, Ron Powers of Johnston.
