Darrel Lamb, 90, of Grinnell, died on Monday, January 27, 2025, with his family by his side at home and under the care of UnityPoint Grinnell Regional Hospice.
His family will receive friends at the visitation held from 2:00 pm until 5:00 pm on Sunday, February 2, 2025 at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell.
A funeral service with military and law enforcement honors will be held at 10:30 am, Monday, February 3, 2025 at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell. Interment will be in Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell. A luncheon will follow at the Elks Lodge in Grinnell.

Darrel Earnest Lamb, born on September 19, 1934, in Grinnell, Iowa, was the cherished son of Earl F. Lamb and Ruth Olive Lamb. Raised on the family farm near Malcom, Iowa, Darrel attended a nearby country school before graduating from Montezuma High School in the Class of 1952.
Darrel proudly served his country as a Sergeant in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War. His commitment to duty and honor were traits that defined him throughout his life.
On November 19, 1977, Darrel married Connie Routier at the United Methodist Church in Grinnell. Together, they built a life in Grinnell, where they remained throughout their marriage.
Darrel began his professional journey at Donaldson’s in Grinnell, where he worked from 1956 to 1968. He then embarked on a distinguished career in law enforcement, serving over 30 years with the Grinnell Police Department. Rising to the rank of Captain, Darrel earned the respect of his colleagues and was widely regarded as a "policeman's policeman" who mentored many officers. He retired from the department in 1998.
In addition to his career, Darrel pursued his passions as a skilled gunsmith and a meticulous repairer of small engines. A man of many talents, he was a dedicated member of the Policeman’s Association, served on the Civil Service Board, and was a past member of the Elks Lodge and the American Legion.
Darrel was a man of unwavering faith and integrity, known for "doing the right thing when no one was looking." An avid outdoorsman, he found joy in hunting and fishing, particularly trout fishing. He took great pride in maintaining an immaculate yard and home, reflecting his hardworking and meticulous nature.
Above all, Darrel was a devoted family man who cherished his loved ones. He embodied honesty, humility, kindness, and a deep sense of patriotism. His dedication to his family, community, and country left an indelible mark on all who knew him. Darrel was not only a fair and faithful servant but also a source of guidance and inspiration to others. He will be remembered for his steadfast character, ornery sense of humor, and unwavering commitment to those he served and loved.
Darrel is survived by his wife of 47 years, Connie Lamb of Grinnell; children, Carla Harvey (Ed) of Fairfield, IA, and Kevin (Sara) Lamb of New Sharon, IA; grandchildren, Bryce (Katelyn) Doane of Sully, IA, Braden (Katlyn) Lamb of New Sharon, IA, Elizabeth Doane (Deklan Lewis), Garrett Lamb of Iowa City, IA, Cameron Harvey of Iowa City, IA; and great-granddaughters, Brinley and Kinsley Doane and Aubrey Myers and Everleigh Lamb. He is preceded in death by his parents; brother, Sidwell (Arlene) Lamb; and sister, Carol Arendt.
