Darwin K. Sherman, age 81, of Washington, Iowa, passed away Tuesday, January 31, 2023, at the Bridgewater Retirement Community in Coralville, Iowa.

The family will be present to receive friends and celebrate Darwin’s life from 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 11, 2023, at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home. Private family interment will take place at the Elm Grove Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established for the Washington Betterment Foundation. Darwin was born March 8, 1941, in Maquoketa, Iowa, the son of Glenn and Wilma (Edwards) Sherman. He graduated from Maquoketa High School in 1959 and attended Graceland College in Lamoni, Iowa, where he was a member of the Graceland wrestling team. Darwin joined the Army Reserves in 1960. He was united in marriage to Patricia O’Hearn on May 2, 1964, in Maquoketa, Iowa.

Darwin lived in Ft. Atkinson, Wisonsin, Ottumwa, Marshalltown and Maquoketa, Iowa, before moving to Washington, Iowa, in 1978. He worked as a Sears Manager, and Advertising Director for the Maquoketa News. After moving to Washington, Darwin was part owner of the Washington Evening Journal and later President and CEO of Inland Industries. While not at work, Darwin enjoyed the outdoors. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and boating and especially enjoyed spending time on his farm west of Washington. Darwin was passionate about buying and selling items and was a gun collector. He loved spending time with his children and grandchildren.

He is survived by two daughters, Traci Koeppel and husband Jeff of North Liberty, Iowa; Darci Witthoft and husband Joel of Washington, Iowa; grandchildren, Nick Witthoft and wife Crystal, Wilx Witthoft and Ruby Witthoft; and one brother, Jim Sherman and wife Jill of Germantown, Illinois.

Darwin was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Patricia in 2015; son, Joseph Sherman in 2019; and sister, Barb House.
