KALONA ? David L. Yoder, 89, of Kalona, died Monday, March 28, 2016, in Pleasantview Home in Kalona.
Celebration of life service will be held at 9:30 a.m., Saturday, April 2, at Sunnyside Mennonite Church in Kalona. Burial will be at Fairview Cemetery in rural Kalona. Visitation will be from 2 until 8 p.m., Friday at the church, where the family will be present from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. A memorial fund has been established for the Pleasantview Building Fund. Yoder-Powell Funeral Home in Kalona is in charge of the arrangements.
Mr. Yoder was born March 23, 1927, in Kalona, the son of Jonas R. and Magdelena (Miller) Yoder. He married the love of his life, Verna Beachy, on June 3, 1948, and the couple shared 67 years of marriage.
He attended Evergreen Country School. During World War II he served in the Civilian Public Service in Denison and in Gulfport, Mississippi. He served as pastor at Sunnyside Mennonite Church from 1959 to 1996. He also served as chaplain at the Pleasantview Home from 1986 to 2011.
Surviving are his wife, Verna, of Kalona; seven children, Joy Yoder-Washington of Baltimore, Maryland, Grace Weber and husband Nelson of Reading, Pennsylvania, Faith Hostetler and husband Dale of Johns Island, South Carolina, James Yoder and wife Trish of Goshen, Indiana, Lowell Yoder and wife Mary of Kalona, Lilly Northrup and husband Danny of Iowa City, and Mary Jewel Abbott and husband Carl of Centerville; 12 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and three brothers, Paul E. Yoder, Ed Yoder, and Frank Yoder and wife Ada.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, John, and Lynn; one son-in-law, Jeff Washington; one half brother, Chris; and two half sisters, Frieda, and Mabel.
