David Michael Lawrence
David Michael Lawrence, 37, of Hiawatha and formerly of Mt. Pleasant, died Tuesday evening, June 20, 2000, at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids, after an extended illness from neurofibroma sarcoma.
The funeral service will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Oakland Church of the Nazarene in Cedar Rapids with the Revs. Paul Miller and Jerry Hill officiating. Burial with military honors by the American Legion Hanford Post #5 will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Cedar Rapids.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Papich-Kuba Janeba Chapel West in Cedar Rapids and after 12:30 p.m. at the church. A rosary will be recited at 4:30 p.m. and a prayer service begins at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the chapel.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Melissa Lawrence Educational Fund, Cedar Rapids Stamp Club, or the Neurofibroma Foundation.
Mr. Lawrence was born October 2, 1962, in Cedar Rapids, the son of Gilbert and Marita Bushman Lawrence.
He was a 1981 graduate of Kennedy High School and had completed three years of college. He graduated from the Mortuary Science Department of the Kansas City Community College in July, 1992, and was employed as a funeral director at several funeral homes in eastern Iowa until retiring earlier this year due to health problems.
Lawrence served in the US Air Force from 1982 to 1987 attaining the rank of sergeant. He was a member of the Oakland Church of the Nazarene, Cedar Rapids Stamp Club, the Lions, and the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, both in Independence.
Survivors include his daughter, Melissa Ann Lawrence, of Cedar Rapids; his parents, of Hiawatha; two brothers, Scott of Rockford, Ill., and John of Cedar Rapids; a niece, twin nephews, numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his grandparents and an aunt.
