H. Dean Batterson, 96, of Washington, Iowa, passed away Sunday, Dec. 20, 2020, at Waukee Independence Village in Waukee, Iowa. Celebration of life services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 23, at Jones & Eden Funeral Home with Pastor Erin Kaye officiating. Calling hours will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 22, at the funeral home. Mask usage and social distancing guidelines will be enforced. The family will not be present for calling hours. Interment will be held at Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington. A memorial has been established for the Washington County Betterment Foundation. Dean was born April 18, 1924, in Washington, Iowa, the son of Aaron and Alpha May (York) Batterson. He graduated from Washington High School. Dean served honorably in the U.S. Army Air Force as a Staff Sargent with the 322nd Bombardier Group during World War II. He was stationed in Great Britain and France and served as a tail gunner in a B26, flying 35 missions. Dean was united in marriage to Joy Janice Fairchild on Aug. 12, 1956, at the First Presbyterian Church in Washington, Iowa.
Dean worked as a Plant Engineer for McCleery Cumming Co. for 27 years, until his retirement in 1989. He was a member of the United Presbyterian Church, Y's Men's Club and the American Legion. Dean was a handy man, particularly skilled in woodworking. He built clocks and built and refinished furniture, which many family and community members were the recipients of. There wasn't anything Dean could not fix. He also had a passion for cars.
He is survived by his daughter, Dee Hunerdosse of Waukee, Iowa; two grandsons, Mitchell and Jackson Hunerdosse of Waukee; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; stepfather, Les Brecht; wife in 2014; and five brothers and one sister.
