Dennis (Denny) D. Smith, 74, of Fairfield, passed away Nov. 19, 2020, of heart failure at UnityPoint Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines.
Denny was born March 1, 1946, in Ralston, Iowa, the son of Wayne A. and Nadine O. Hale Smith. He worked as a meat cutter at Oscar Meyer in Perry, Cargill Meats in Ottumwa and was disa operator at Dexter Foundry in Fairfield. He retired 2005.
Denny married Linda Garnes in 1969. They later divorced. They had three children. He later married Mary J. Malcom and became stepfather of her four children. She passed away in 1988. On June 19, 1993, he married Shirley Gowey Tucker. He became stepfather to her two sons. They were married 27 years. Denny served in Vietnam from 1965 to 1967 as communications specialist in the Army.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Wayne and Nadine; infant son, Dennis Jr.; infant grandson, Bryce Tucker; stepson, Kenneth Malcom; three brothers, Gary, Craig and Alan Smith; father-in-law, Bruce Gowey; and two sisters-in-law, Susan and Colleen Smith.
Denny is survived by his wife, Shirley of Fairfield; and daughters, Cheri Rinner of Woodward and Brandi Rosas of Madrid; Also surviving are Jenny Graves of Newton, Christine (Scott) Heller of Ottumwa, Kelly Malcom of Centerville, Michael (Shannon) Tucker of Wayland and Matthew (Brandy) Tucker of Fairfield; 21 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; sisters, Janet Smith of Jefferson and Janice (Ronald) Tasler of Van Buren, Ark.; sisters-in-law, Deb Haney and Bernie and Norma and Rayleen Smith; mother-in-law, Doris Gowey; and several nieces and nephews.

With the COVID-19 outbreak at this time, a celebration of life will be held at a later date in the Spring when all family and friends can be together.
