Dick Wheeler Lauer was born May 13, 1925, in Mount Union, the son of Arthur Benjamin and Helen Lillian (Wheeler) Lauer. He was a graduate of Mount Union High School. Dick proudly served in the U.S. Army during World War II, stationed in Italy and he attained the rank of Corporal. On Oct. 27, 1947, Dick was united in marriage to Mary Doraine Oldt in Winfield. He was a farmer early in his life, worked at the Blacksmith Shop in Mount Union, sold Ferguson Tractors and retired from GE in Burlington. Dick was a member of the Mount Union United Methodist Church and a past member of the Winfield American Legion 643. One of Dick's proudest moments was going on the Honor Flight. He also was the Mayor of Mount Union and was on the Mount Union Volunteer Fire Department, where he served as Chief. Dick enjoyed collecting and restoring antique tractors, woodworking, farming, working with his hands, camping and going to Old Threshers, but most of all, he dearly loved to spend time with his family.
Dick will be deeply missed by his daughters, Janice (Roger) Richers of Mount Union and Kimberly (Rodney) Davis of Columbus Junction; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Beverly Clifton.
Dick was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Mary Doraine Lauer, on Dec. 2, 2009; daughter, Carolyn Kay Lauer on Jan. 6, 2015; and two sisters, Dixie Conard and Barbara Hagedorn.
