Don Carlan Comstock
Don Carlan Comstock, 74, died at 4:15 p.m. Friday, Nov. 24, 2000, of pancreatic cancer.
The funeral service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 28, at the Mt. Pleasant Open Bible Church with the Revs. Mike Johnson and Randy Beary officiating. Visitation will be Monday, Nov. 27, from noon until 7 p.m. at the Beatty Funeral Home of Mt. Pleasant and with the family present on Tuesday, Nov. 28, at the Mt. Pleasant Open Bible Church from 9:30 a.m. to the time of the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Mt. Pleasant Open Bible Church, Paul Townsend, missionary to the Philippines, Crossroads Hospice, or the Mt. Pleasant Christian School.
Mr. Comstock was born May 19, 1926, in Chariton, the son of Ruth Shull Carlan. At the age of 3 days, he was given to the Iowa Soldiers and Orphans Home in Davenport, later renamed the Anne Wintenmeyer Home. He was taken as a foster child by Jessie and Lydia Swartz Comstock of the Shiloh area, now part of the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant. When Jessie Comstock died in 1936, his wife and foster son moved to rural New London. He farmed for 28 years and retired from General Electric after 22 years. He served in the Korean War for two years while stationed at Fort Benning, Ga. He married Anna L. Willson on July 5, 1955, at her parents? home in rural Mt. Pleasant. He attended the Mt. Pleasant Open Bible Church.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Marvin Comstock of Iowa City; two daughters, Donna and Kelvin Strand of Blooming Prairie, Minn. and Sara and Joe Short of Mt. Pleasant; two sisters, Mary J. Throckmorton of Chariton and Beverly Frecker of Tampa, Fla.; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
