Donald F. Pierce
Donald F. Pierce, 77, of Tacoma, Wash., and formerly of Salem, died Tuesday, May 2, 2000, at Allenmore Hospital in Tacoma.
The funeral service and inurnment will be at 9 a.m. on Saturday, July 1, at Salem East Cemetery with Father Mark Osterhaus officiating. Military honors will be provided by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #2561 and American Legion Post #58. A memorial has been established to the History Department Faculty Endowment Scholarship Fund Foundation of Eastern Washington University in Cheney, Wash.
Mr. Pierce was born July 27, 1922, at Salem, the son of Ira H. and Ruth Bliss Pierce. He married Margaret J. Butter on August 10, 1947, in Council Bluffs.
He graduated from Iowa City High School, enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1942, and served in the U.S. Signal Corps until 1944. He graduated from the University of Iowa with bachelors, masters, and Ph.D. degrees. He taught history and was the dean of students at Bethany College of Lindsbourg, Kan., before moving to Cheney in 1957 where he taught in and was past chairman of the history department of Eastern Washington University. He retired in 1981.
Survivors include two sons, John Pierce of Seattle, Wash., and William Pierce of Vancouver, Wash.; one daughter, Donna McNeal of Tacoma, Wash.; and five grandchildren.
