Donald G. Smith, 64, of 4420 71st Place in Urbandale died Thursday, May 4, 2000, at his home of pancreatic cancer.
The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 6, at the Westover Funeral Home in Des Moines with the Rev. Alberta Ervin officiating. Burial will be in the McDivitt Grove Cemetery in Urbandale. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. today at the Westover Funeral Home, where the family will receive friends from 5:30 to 8 p.m. this evening. Memorials can be made to the Pan-Can (Pancreatic Cancer Research) or Hospice of Central Iowa.
Mr. Smith was born May 16, 1936, in Mt. Pleasant, the son of Melvin J. and Helen Smith. He lived in Urbandale since 1970. Prior to living in Urbandale, he lived in Burlington from 1959-1966 and Davenport from 1966-1970. He worked for the Iowa Department of Education as a Business Education Consultant, retiring in 1999. He was a member of the Marine Corp during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of the American Vocational Association/American Cancer and Technical Association, the Business Professionals of America (and member of the National Board of Directors and a State Advisor), the National Business Education Association, the Business Educators of Iowa, the Iowa Business Education Association and the Iowa Vocational Association. He enjoyed golfing, fishing and bowling.
Survivors include his mother, Helen Smith of Mt. Pleasant; his wife, Darlene A. Smith of Urbandale; one son, Douglas G. Smith of Louisville, Ky.; two daughters, Corrine A. Nelson of Des Moines and Amanda D. Bruett of Urbandale; two sisters, Patty Royer of Mt. Pleasant and Donna Huston of Des Moines; a half-sister, Vivian Myers of Mt. Pleasant; and seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father; his brother, Mel Smith; and two half-sisters, Erma Goursau and Jean Ritz.
