Donald Joseph Hellweg
Donald Joseph Hellweg, 79, of West Point, died at 3:20 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 29, 2007 at the Donnellson Health Center in Donnellson.
Friends may call after 1 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 30 at the Schmitz-Lynk Funeral Home in West Point where the family will meet with friends from 6-8 p.m. A rosary will be recited at 3 p.m. and a wake service will be held at 7 p.m. that evening.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be said at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Aug. 31, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in West Point with Fr. Apo T. Mpanda as celebrant.
Burial, with full military rites by the West Point American Legion, will be at Calvary Cemetery in West Point.
Memorials may be made to the Donnellson Health Center or Lee County Hospice.
Born Aug. 16, 1928 at St. Paul, Donald was the son of Rudolf and Elizabeth Umthun Hellweg. On Aug. 8, 1953 at West Point, he married Mary "Jean" Rauenbuehler.
Donald was a U.S. Army veteran serving in Korea. He was a mechanic for 25 years at J.J. Nichting. He also delivered parts for West Point Auto and he farmed. Donald was a member of the West Point American Legion and St. Mary's Catholic Church in West Point. He enjoyed fishing, playing cards and watching western shows.
Survivors include three sons, Rick (Deb) Hellweg, Larry (Rita) Hellweg and Marty (Janet) Hellweg, all of West Point; two daughters, Donna (Terry) Simons of West Point and Lisa (Greg) Whittemore of Dallas City, Ill.; one son-in-law, five grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; two brothers, Arthur Hellweg of Fairfield, and Ronald Hellweg of Fort Madison; two sisters, Florence Brown of Fort Madison and Erma Massey of Donnellson.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, one daughter, Dixie; one granddaughter; two brothers and two sisters.
