Donald Ray Pickard, 81, Brighton died at his home Thursday morning, June 6, 2024. He was born in Washington, IA to Raymond Leslie and Mable Lavina Wilhelm Pickard. Donnie grew up in the Pleasant Plain and Packwood area and graduated from Pekin High School in 1960. He worked at Hayes 66 in Richland and other gas stations in Fairfield. Donnie married Sheila Diane Hayes on April 11, 1971 and she died September 19, 1998. He served in the U.S. Navy Reserves then went on to Active Duty for a total of 30 years. He served on the Douglas H. Fox, DD779 and the USS Luce, DDG38. Donnie worked for Estle DeLong Construction as an equipment operator and mechanic and most recently for Dickey Transport. He was a member of the American Legion in Washington, Am Vets of Iowa, DAV and was a member of Woolson Friends Church.
He is survived by his son Lonnie of Brighton, 4 grandchildren, and three brothers: Ron and Judy Pickard of Fairfield, Ed Pickard of Libertyville and Gary and Rosalie of Goodlettsville, TN. Donnie was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, 2 sisters: Bonnie Bagby and Roberta Gowey and one brother, Ray Pickard.
Funeral services will be held at Woolson Friends Church near Richland at 10 A.M. June 17, 2024, with Pastor Jerry Hoover officiating. Burial will follow at BluePoint Cemetery near Richland. Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 P.M. Sunday, June 16, 2024, at the Gould Funeral Home in Brighton. Memorials may be left at the funeral home, church or mailed to the family at 200 West Railroad Street Brighton, IA 52540. Gould Funeral Home of Brighton is in charge of arrangements.
