KALONA ? Donald Ray Speas, 78, of Kalona, died Thursday, Nov. 6, 2014, in the University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City.
His body has been cremated, and a private family burial will be held at a later date. A general memorial fund has been established. The Beatty Peterseim Funeral Home in Kalona is handling the arrangements.
Mr. Speas was born March 14, 1936, in Kalona, the son of Lester ?Bud? and Mabel (Hartsock) Speas. He married Glennis Slaubaugh on April 7, 1963, at the Kalona United Methodist Church.
He graduated from Kalona High School in 1954 and enlisted in the Army in 1958. He served his country in the Army until 1960, when he transferred to the Army Reserve, where he served until 1964. He worked for the City of Kalona from 1969 to 1998. He was a member of the Kalona Volunteer Fire Department from 1968 to 1993. He enjoyed watching Hawkeye football and fishing.
Surviving are his wife, Glennis, of Kalona; two sons, Jim Speas of Kalona, and Stacy Speas and wife Mary of Kalona; one granddaughter; and one sister, Carolyn Petersen of Stanwood.
