Donald Willis Mason was born November 18, 1942, in Ottumwa, Iowa, the son of Donald Wayne and Lois Elizabeth (Hornaday) Mason. Don grew up in Ottumwa, where he graduated from Ottumwa High School. Don was then active in the United States Air Force from 1961-1963, during which he was blessed with a son, Shawn.
Don was later united in marriage to Annette Cooksey, and to this union they were blessed with three sons, they later divorced. Don made Marengo his home after starting to work at Amana Refrigeration in Middle Amana, where he was a second shift supervisor for 33 years. Don was united in marriage to Carol Ann Griffin on April 11, 1970, and to this union they were blessed with two daughters. He was a member of the American Legion Post #76, St. John’s Lutheran Church and the Marengo Golf Course. Don enjoyed golf and bowling, and was an avid Chicago Cubs, Iowa Hawkeye and Indiana Fever fan. Don passed away Wednesday, September 17, 2025, at Rose Haven Nursing Home in Marengo surrounded by family, at the age of 82 years.
He is survived by his wife; three sons, Mike (Jennifer) Mason of Luzerne, Chris (Chela) Mason of Norwalk and Steve (Amber) Mason of Green Mountain, MO; two daughters, Cassie Mason and Donette (Ben) Boots both of Belle Plaine; three step daughters, Denise (Rick) Sieck of Atkins; Angie Maschmann and Judy Maschmann, both of Cedar Rapids; and special granddaughter Shalina (Brad) Frimml of North Liberty; 22 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren; and 4 great great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, son Shawn Mason, brothers Bill and Bob Mason, and sister Ann House.
A Memorial Gathering will be held from 1:00-4:00 pm on Sunday, September 28, 2025, at the Marengo American Legion Post #76 Hall with a short service starting at 1:00 p.m. Powell Funeral Home in Marengo is caring for Don and his family.
