Doris Jean Meyer, 88, of Wayland, died Tuesday, July 14, 2015, in Parkview Home in Wayland.
A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m., Friday, July 17, at the Sugar Creek Mennonite Cemetery in rural Wayland. A memorial celebration will be at 11 a.m., Friday at the Sugar Creek Mennonite Church in rural Wayland with the Rev. Nathan Luitjens officiating. Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m., Thursday at the church, where the family will greet friends from 5 to 8 p.m. A memorial fund has been established for Sugar Creek Mennonite Church and Parkview Home in Wayland. Beatty Peterseim Funeral Home in Washington is in charge of the arrangements.
Mrs. Meyer was born Jan. 20, 1927, in Wayland, the daughter of Emery I. and Edna Ruth (Wenger) Eigsti. She married Dean Meyer on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 22, 1945.
She spent the first year of married life in New Jersey working as a housekeeper for a wealthy family while her husband served with Civilian Public Service in a mental hospital. She was a homemaker and also worked part time at Ron?s Gifts, Book and TV Center, where she enjoyed buying books to read and give away. She taught Sunday school at Sugar Creek Mennonite Church, where she worshipped and served her entire life. She was instrumental in starting Crowded Closet in Iowa City. She was passionate about mission work, serving the lonely and less fortunate. She didn?t serve on boards or mix with influential people; she was more at home cleaning someone?s house, preparing a meal or hosting those who needed her hospitality. She enjoyed life and continued to serve during retirement winters in Florida. She was known as being loving and humble.
Surviving are two sons, R.D. Meyer and wife Brenda of Laguna Nigel, Calif., and Robert Meyer and wife Karen of Mount Pleasant; one daughter, Kathy Schooley and husband Dave of Wayland; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years; one infant sister, Marilyn; and one brother, Mervin.
