Doris K. Poindexter
Doris K. Poindexter, 77, of Urbandale, died Nov. 15, 2000, at Antelope Valley Health Care Center in Lancaster, Calif., of heart failure.
The memorial service will be 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 16, at the Urbandale United Church of Christ with the Rev. Sue Gallagher officiating. Disposition of ashes will be in the Winterset Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Friends of the Prairie Learning Center, Des Moines Retired Teachers Scholarship Fund, or the Urbandale United Church of Christ.
Mrs. Poindexter was born Aug. 11, 1923, in Madison County. She graduated from Winterset High School and from Iowa State University, working as a vocational educator for over 30 years before retiring in 1989. She worked as a high school home economics teacher in Corning, Sumner and Mt. Pleasant, and worked several years as head of the home economics department at Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids. She was an active member and officer in various professional and civic organizations, including Future Homemakers of America/Home Economics Related Occupations; American Vocational Association and Iowa Vocational Association; Partners in Vocational Technical Education; Iowa Retired School Personnel Association; Des Moines Area Retired Teachers Association; Iowa Association for Career and Technical Education; Iowa Partnership in Action; Delta Rho Honor Society of Home Economics; Delta Kappa Gamma; Urbandale Lioness Club; Church Women United; Urbandale Historical Society; Friends of the Des Moines Botanical Center; and Friends of the Prairie Learning Center. She was a 50 year member of the Order of the Eastern Star. Other activities included crafts, painting, sewing, reading and bird-watching.
Survivors include a daughter, Vicki and Geoff White of Columbia, Calif.; a son, James ?Nick? and Cathie Poindexter of Lancaster, Calif.; a sister, Barbara Demory of West Des Moines; a brother, Philip Sawyer of Denver, Colo.; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and various nieces, nephews, and cousins.
