KALONA ? Doris Ladene (Marner) Swartzendruber, 92, of Kalona, died Wednesday, March 23, 2016, in the Pleasantview Home in Kalona.
A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, March 26, at Lower Deer Creek Mennonite Church in rural Kalona with the Rev. Don Patterson officiating. Burial will follow at the Lower Deer Creek Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m., Friday, March 25, at the Peterseim Funeral Home in Kalona, and one hour before the service, Saturday at the church. A memorial fund has been established for Crooked Creek Christian Camp.
Mrs. Swartzendruber was born Nov. 25, 1923, at home in Johnson County, the daughter of David and Blanche (Swartzendruber) Marner. She married Mark P. Swartzendruber on June 1, 1947, at the Lower Deer Creek Mennonite Church.
She graduated from Kalona High School in 1942. She broke her arm in kindergarten on the first day of school, but completed her high school education as valedictorian. She was primarily a homemaker, but also worked as secretary at Farmers Savings Bank and manager of the Eastern Iowa Cutting Room fabric store. She and her husband lived in the Kalona area all of their married life. She was a lifelong member of Lower Deer Creek Mennonite Church, where she was involved in music and WMSC, teaching Sunday school, and serving as church secretary for over 30 years. She and her husband were the first sponsors of Mennonite Youth Fellowship at Lower Deer Creek.
Surviving are one son, Linwood ?Woody? Swartzendruber and wife Karen of Ankeny; one daughter, Mary Lou Farmer and husband Roger of Washington; two granddaughters; nine great-grandchildren; and one brother, Phil Marner and wife Dorothy of Sarasota, Florida.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Mark, in 2009; and two brothers, Don, and Gerald Marner.
