KALONA ? Dorothy Lucille Showalter, 84, of Kalona, died Friday, Aug. 12, 2016.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m., Tuesday, Aug. 16, at the Kalona Mennonite Church in Kalona with the Rev. Scott Swartzendruber officiating. Family visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m., Monday, Aug. 15, at the church. Burial will be at the West Union Cemetery. A memorial fund has been established for the Kalona Mennonite Church Youth Fellowship (Mission Trips) or the Pleasantview Home in Kalona, where she was a resident at the time of her death. Beatty-Peterseim Funeral Home of Kalona is in charge of arrangements.
Miss Showalter was born May 15, 1932, in rural Wellman, the daughter of Harry P. and Lala M. (Bender) Showalter.
She attended rural school at Woodland and Daytonville, two years at Parnell High School, and graduated from IMS in 1950. She worked at Maplecrest Turkey Plant, Yoder Feed Mill and University of Iowa Hospitals, retiring from there in 1994 after 34 years of service. She was a faithful member of Kalona Mennonite church, and served a number of years as Sunday school secretary, as kitchen hostess, and on the kitchen committee. She also served as a member of the Kalona Lioness Club and Mid-Prairie Council of Churches Committee. Her hobbies included knitting, quilting, crocheting, and traveling. She crocheted many baby caps and sewed lap robes for University of Iowa Hospitals. She crocheted different Christmas ornaments for 28 years to share with family and friends. Travels took her to Yugoslavia, to Europe (where she saw the Passion Play) twice, Hawaii twice, Canada, and various places in the United States. One of her trips took her to Reedley, California, where she helped with fruit drying for Mennonite Central Committee. She also taught Bible school at various places, plus at Kalona Mennonite, where in later years she helped cook lunches for Bible school staff and children.
Surviving are one brother, Darrel Showalter and wife Janet of Kalona; two sisters-in-law, Iva Showalter of Cedar Rapids, and Kathy Showalter of Mount Pleasant; 11 nieces and nephews and their spouses; and 19 great-nieces and great-nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Dale, and Don; and one nephew.
