Douglas E. Hesseltine, age 65, of Washington, Iowa, passed away Saturday, September 30, 2023, at the University of Iowa Hospital.
Celebration of life services will be held 2:00 p.m. Thursday, October 5, 2023, at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home with Pastor Rick Hughes officiating. Calling hours will begin 5:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home where the family will be present to receive friends from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. Private family interment will take place at a later date. Doug was born December 31, 1958, in Washington, Iowa, the son of Charles and Virginia (Crawford) Hesseltine. He attended school in Washington and graduated from Washington High School in 1976. Doug attended Culinary School at Indian Hills Community College in Ottumwa. He was united in marriage to Nita Joyce Thompson on May 20, 1990, in Washington, Iowa.
Doug was a lifelong resident of Washington County where he was a heavy equipment operator for DeLong Keith Construction for many years. He was a true outdoorsman. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and mushroom hunting. He loved to cook and he especially loved spending time with his grandchildren and attending their many events.
He is survived by his daughter, Amanda (Scott) Entsminger of Centerville, Iowa; seven grandchildren: Scott, Coral, Hope, Michael, Zoe, Zacchaeus, and Charli Entsminger; five great-grandchildren; and eleven siblings: Gail Morris of Humboldt, Iowa; Don Hesseltine of Keota, Iowa; David (Jen) Hesseltine of Springfield, Tennessee; Darrell Hesseltine of Sigourney, Iowa; Duncan Hesseltine of Iowa City, Iowa; Leroy (Renee) Letts of Fairfield, Iowa; Roger (Lisa) Letts of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Joanne Letts of Washington, Iowa; Becky Loving of Birmingham, Iowa; Joe Hesseltine of Brighton, Iowa; Dusty Hesseltine of Burlington, Iowa; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Doug was preceded in death by his wife, Nita, in 2020; father, Charles; and his mother, Virginia.
