Dr. Eleanor Longer
DR. A. ELEANOR LONGER, ED.D.
Fort Myers, Fla.
Dr. Anna Eleanor Longer
of Fort Myers, Fla., passed away Thursday, Dec. 10, 2020. Eleanor was born on July 21, 1930. in Astoria, N.Y., to Edward and Anna Newdale. Eleanor is survived by her loving husband of 24 years, Donald K. Longer, originally from Washington, Iowa; her two daughters, Cynthia A. Chunderlik, (Jay) and Brandie A. Villano, (Frank); and two grandsons, Matthew and Spencer.
Eleanor was predeceased by her first husband, Glenn Gash; her parents, Edward and Anna; and her older brother, Edward Jr.
Eleanor received her undergraduate and doctorate degrees from Hofstra University in New York, where she majored in reading and elementary education. Later, she performed post-doctoral work in psychology at St. John's University, also in New York.
In addition to several years of classroom teaching in the Huntington Station, Union Free School System, in New York, Dr. Longer held several administrative positions including, supervisor of special education, associate director of testing for Lee County Schools, associate director of reading for Lee County Schools, reading consultant and director of psychology for Lee County Schools for 10 years.
Dr. Longer taught adjunct graduate and undergraduate courses in reading instruction, diagnosis of reading problems and language arts for elementary education majors at the University of South Florida for 17 years.
Eleanor was a charter member of the Whiskey Creek Country Club receiving one of the first Equity Certificates in 1974. She served numerous terms on the board of directors including as president of the board, from 2001 to 2004. Eleanor was the first to volunteer for many club activities and could always be found on the golf course or enjoying a game of bridge. Eleanor was also involved in many volunteer activities with the Kiwanis Club of Fort Myers and was the commander of Chapter Staff for the Military Order of World Wars, (MOWWA).
No services are planned due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Alzheimer's Association.
