Dwayne C. Mathews, 91, of Danville, died Saturday, November 11, 2023 at the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House in West Burlington.

Born October 3, 1932 in Burlington, he was the son of Port and Grace (Stucker) Mathews. He graduated from Danville High School in 1950 and then attended Iowa State University receiving a certificate in agriculture and farming. While at ISU, he was a member of Alpha Gamma Rho Fraternity and involved in the ROTC program. Dwayne served his country in the U.S. Army and earned a Medal of Honor during the Korean Conflict.

On December 27, 1958 he married Georgia Cash at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church in Mt. Pleasant.

He was of the Catholic Faith.

Dwayne owned and operated Mathews Angus farm for over 70 years. He was past president and secretary of Southeast Iowa Angus Association, served on the Des Moines County Fair Board and a Lifetime member of the American Angus Association. In 2004, he earned the American Angus Association’s Historic Angus Herd Award for continuous production of registered Angus cattle by the same individual for more than 50 years.

He enjoyed flying remote control air planes, country western line dancing, riding motorcycles in the 70s, attending cattle shows and going to state and county fairs. Dwayne had a beautiful voice. He sang in the choir and was a soloist for his high school graduation.

Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Georgia of Danville; children Debbie Mathews of Danville, Steve (Sandra) Mathews of Harpers Ferry, West Virginia, Monica Myers of Burlington; eight grandchildren Ryan, Dylan, Blayne, Brooke, Nick, Marissa, Morgan, Johanna; ten great-grandchildren and sister-in-law Mary Mathews of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Dr. Leslie Mathews and son-in-law Jim Myers.

The celebration of life service for Dwayne will be 2 p.m. Friday, December 8, 2023 at Lunning Chapel. Reverend Jacob Greiner will be celebrant. Military Rites will be performed by the Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard. The visitation will be 1 p.m. until the time of service. Inurnment will be in Jaggar Cemetery.

A memorial has been established for the Des Moines County Fair.

According to his wishes, cremation has been entrusted to Lunning Chapel.
