Edward J. "Ed" Brezina, 94, of Washington, Iowa, died Wednesday, June 24, 2020, at the Washington County Hospital.
Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday,
June 29, at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home with
Fr. Bernie Weir officiating. Services will be livestreamed on the Jones & Eden Facebook page. Calling hours will be held from 12:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. Sunday where the family will be present to receive friends from 2:00 until 4:00 p.m. Interment with military honors will be held at the Oregon Township Cemetery in Ainsworth, Iowa. Edward was born January 7, 1926, in Elberon, Iowa, the son of Joseph and Rose (Balvin) Brezina. He attended school in Elberon, Iowa, and finished his education at Montour, Iowa. Edward was united in marriage to Maisie Odet Dalziel on October 30, 1966 in Toledo, Iowa.
Edward worked at the Rath Packing Plant in Waterloo, Iowa, until being transferred to the Rath Packing Plant in Columbus Junction, Iowa, in the late 1960s. He later worked at the University of Iowa, Walmart, Fansteel and was a hired man for several area farmers. Edward was a veteran of the United States Army and the Army National Guard where he served honorably in World War II and the Korean Conflict.
He was a member of St. James Catholic Church in Washington, the Ainsworth American Legion, and was humbled to participate in the WWII honor flight. Edward enjoyed being outside and especially liked to mow. He enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Edward is survived by his son, Ryan Brezina of Ainsworth, Iowa; daughter, Kim Thomas of Washington, Iowa; son, Robert Sturch and wife Sandie of Harpers Ferry, Iowa; four grandchildren, Josh Laws and fiancee Amanda Graber of Crawfordsville, Iowa, Zach Thomas and wife Jill of Washington, Iowa, Demi Shetler and husband Kirby of Ainsworth, Iowa, and Drake Brezina of Washington, Iowa; four great-grandchildren; nine siblings, Gladys Brezina of Tama, Iowa, Rosie Hartmeyer of Belle Plaine, Iowa, Leonard Brezina and wife Inga of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Margie Emerson and husband Rodney of Belle Plaine, Iowa, Marcella Cline and husband Jim of Swisher, Iowa, Arlene Tubbs and husband Bill of Swisher, Iowa, Richard Brezina of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Caroline Zach of Guttenberg, Iowa, and Bernard Brezina and wife Sharon of Tama, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Maisie, in 2004; sister, Lillian Lund; and brother, Joe Brezina Jr.
