WASHINGTON - Edward L. "Ed" Kauffman, age 87, of Washington, Iowa died Monday, September 4, 2006 at the Washington Care Center after failing in health for the past nine months.
Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday in St. James Catholic Church in Washington with Fr. Ed O'Melia officiating. Visitation will begin at 9:00 a.m. Wednesday at the Jones Eden Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 6:00 - 8:30 Wednesday evening. Prayer services will be held at 7:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Jones Eden Funeral Home followed by a 4th Degree Knights of Columbus service. Interment will be at Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington, Iowa. Ed was born May 13, 1919 in Washington, Iowa, the son of Anton and Leah (Stalder) Kauffman. He attended school at the Pleasant Ridge Country School in Washington County. On November 26, 1941 Ed was united in marriage to Lois Nelson in Washington, Iowa.
Ed was a lifelong resident of Washington County where he farmed south of Washington. He was glad to farm land that has been in the Kauffman family for nearly a century. Ed was a member of St. James Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, 4th Degree Knights, the Moose Lodge and the Eagles Lodge. He enjoyed fishing and hunting and attending dances.
He is survived by his wife Lois Kauffman of Washington, Iowa; daughter Carolyn Pilcher and her husband Bob of Ottumwa, Iowa; daughter-in-law, Juanita Kauffman of Washington, Iowa and daughter-in-law Vicki Ropp and her husband Myron of Kalona, Iowa. Ed is also survived by ten grandchildren: Robin Horsman, Chad Kauffman, Jason Harter, Theresa Kauffman, Jenny Zabrocki, Misty Goodwin, Casey Palmer, Brandi Rickey, Jami Kauffman and Tony Kauffman; six step-grandchildren: Connie McFarland, Terry Irwin, Ruth Richards, Lucinda Sallee, David Pilcher and Richard Pilcher; as well as 17 great-grandchildren: Koben Stone-Kauffman, Samantha Kauffman, Maverik Goodwin, Makenna Goodwin, Marshal Goodwin, Brooklin Jones, Vincent Jones, Bryce Rickey, Kendra Rickey, Gabrielle Rickey, Lukus Rickey, Parker Palmer, Courtney Harter, Jessica Harter, Emily Zabrocki, Faith Zabrocki and Will Zabrocki; as well as 12 step great grandchildren; and 13 step great great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two sons - James in 1988 and Kenneth in 1992 as well as one brother Wilmer Kauffman and one sister, Helen Kauffman.
