KALONA ? Edwin David ?Ed? Heusinkveld, 88, of Kalona, died Thursday, April 21, 2016, in the Pleasantview Home in Kalona.
A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m., Sunday, April 24, at the Pleasantview Home Chapel in Kalona with Chaplains John King and Diane Brenneman officiating. A visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m., Sunday at the Friendship Center at the Pleasantview Home. A second memorial service will be held Monday, April 25, at St. Stephens Lutheran Church in Urbandale with the Rev. Dan Kuchuck officiating. A memorial fund has been established for Mosaic (Lutheran-based services for people with intellectual disabilities) and the Pleasantview Home Building Fund. The Peterseim Funeral Home in Kalona is assisting the family with the arrangements.
Mr. Heusinkveld was born Aug. 21, 1927, in Fulton, the son of Edwin D. and Rose (Anderson) Heusinkveld. He married Helen Rod on June 6, 1957, in Story City.
He graduated from Franklin High School in Cedar Rapids, and summa cum laude from Wheaton College, where he enjoyed singing in the Wheaton Glee Club. He also earned a Ph.D. in education at the University of Iowa. He served his country in the Navy in the Mediterranean and the Middle East. He spent his career as a college administrator at Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio, and Grandview College in Des Moines. He was a member of the St. Stephens Lutheran Church in Urbandale, and had served on the Polk County Health Services Board, the Convalescent Home For Children Board, and the Bethphage Mission Board. He enjoyed singing, gardening, photography, and collecting bird prints and puzzles. He was talented at Hardanger Cross Stitch, winning several blue ribbons at the Iowa State Fair.
Surviving are his wife, Helen, of Kalona; three sons, David Heusinkveld and wife Gail of Kalona, John Heusinkveld of Tomahawk, Wisconsin, and Mark Heusinkveld of Des Moines; four grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Richard Heusinkveld.
