Elaine Walters, 100, of Mount Pleasant, Iowa, passed away Sunday, Feb. 6, 2022, at Sunrise Terrace Care Center in Winfield, Iowa. Born May 10, 1921, in Hamilton, Ill., she was the daughter of Lynn Harlow and Helen Summers Hosford. On Feb. 21, 1942, she married Charles Edward Walters in Newton, Iowa. They celebrated 64 years of marriage in 2006, the year he passed away.
Mrs. Walters graduated from Fort Madison High School and lived in Burlington, Danville, New London and Mount Pleasant. She and Charley spent 29 winters in Mesa, Ariz., after retirement. They enjoyed RVing and traveled to all 48 contiguous states, Canada and Mexico. She was a homemaker and while raising her family she was a Sunday school teacher, a Girl Scout leader and a 4-H leader. She loved reading, dancing, golf, and playing cards, but she especially loved her family.
Survivors include her daughters, Terry (Delmar) Small of Bloomington, Ill., and Kathy Nellor of Mount Pleasant; one niece whom they raised, Peg (Duane) Siegfried of Port Charlotte, Fla.; three grandchildren, Natalie (Justin) Burgus of Mount Pleasant, Rachel (Duane) Bebb of Salem and Bryan (Soosi) Siegfried of Staunton, Ill.; five great-grandchildren, Garrett Burgus, River Bebb and Charley, Jose and Ace Siegfried; and special niece and nephews, Jan (Gary) Perry of Yreka, Calif., Rollie (Lori) Ford of Georgetown, Texas, and Jeff (Nan) Walters of Burlington.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; son-in-law, Dennis Nellor; nephews whom they raised, Randy and Bunker Upton; and her sister, Lynore Frey.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 9, at Elliott Chapel, New London, with the Rev. Trey Hagar officiating. According to her wishes, her body has been cremated and inurnment will be held at a later date. Immediately following the service, the family will greet friends at the chapel.
