ELLEN MARIE (JARRARD) HAMAN
Washington
Ellen Marie (Jarrard) Haman, 72, passed away Dec. 11, 2020, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, Iowa, of natural causes. Celebration of life services will be held at a later date. In memory of Ellen, memorial gifts may be given to the Iowa City Senior Center. Jones & Eden Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements. Online condolences may be sent for Ellen's family through the web at www.jonesfh.com.
Ellen was born Feb. 4, 1948, in Washington, Iowa, the daughter of Doyle and Maxine (Darbyshire) Jarrard. She graduated from Washington High School in 1966 and the University of Iowa in 1970. During her college years and until January 1973, Ellen worked at Mercy Medical Center.
Ellen was united in marriage to David Haman on Jan. 31, 1970, and lived in Marengo, Iowa, until they were involved in a serious accident and needed to be closer to the University of Iowa Hospital for Ellen's care. Their marriage was blessed by the birth of their daughter, Caroline, in 1973. They later divorced and Ellen continued to live in Iowa City for 40 years. She moved to a nursing home in Washington, Iowa, in 2015.
Ellen loved spending time with her daughter and son-in-law, as well as her grandsons. She spent many days at Pathways and the Iowa City Senior Center in fellowship with others and participating in crafts and games. She loved music and singing and would often break out in song. She had an incredible memory of the words, no matter how many verses the song had. Ellen also loved meeting with her friends at the Java House. The staff there spoke fondly of Ellen and always looked forward to her visits.
During her life, Ellen faced many challenges as a result of her accident in 1973. Despite many setbacks, she found a way to live with her disabilities. Through her strong faith and courage, she was able to remain cheerful and friendly, setting an example for the rest of us.
She is survived by her daughter, Caroline Pester and husband Robert of West Des Moines, Iowa; two grandsons, Matthew Pester and wife Emily of Runnells, Iowa, and Andrew Pester of Ames, Iowa; siblings, Gaylen (Lynda) Jarrard of Washington, Iowa, Keith (Melody) Jarrard of Keswick, Iowa, Margaret Jarrard of Washington, Iowa, and Joyce (Ragan) Craig of Washington, Iowa; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
Ellen was preceded in death by her grandparents, William and Wilma Darbyshire and George and Margaret Jarrard; father, Doyle Jarrard, in 2002; mother, Maxine Jarrard, in 2004; sister-in-law, Dorothy Jarrard, in 2014; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
