RIVERSIDE ? Elmer Vernon Schneider, 84, of Riverside, died Friday, Nov. 27, 2015, in Atrium Village in Hills.
A funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m., Tuesday, Dec. 1, at the St. Mary?s Catholic Church in Riverside with the Rev. Dr. David Brownfield officiating. Burial will be in the Mount Olivet Cemetery with military honors provided by the Riverside VFW Post 6414. Following committal services at the cemetery, a time of food and fellowship will be held at the St. Mary?s Parish Center. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m., Monday, Nov. 30, at the church, with a 4 p.m. prayer service. Memorials may be directed to the 4-H Organization. The Sorden-Lewis Home for Funeral and Cremation Services in Riverside is in charge of the arrangements.
Mr. Schneider was born Sept. 7, 1931, in Riverside, the son of Peter and Agnes (Streb) Schneider. He married Vernita Droll on Aug. 26, 1953, at the St. Mary?s Catholic Church in Riverside.
He was a 1949 graduate of St. Mary?s High School in Riverside. He proudly served in the Marines during the Korean conflict. He was a farmer in the Riverside area his entire life. He was a member of the St. Mary?s Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus Fourth Degree, and NFO. He was a 4-H leader for 20 years, being inducted into the Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame for Washington County. He served on the Highland school board from 1964 to 1975, the Washington County Board of Supervisors from 1975 to 1986, and worked at the Washington County Home. He also started the Baseball Youth Program in Riverside and the Riverside Little League Program. He loved going to his children?s and grandchildren?s sporting events and 4-H shows.
Surviving are his wife, Vernita, of Riverside; eight children, John Schneider and wife Carol of Lone Tree, Janice Carr and husband Dennis of Washington, James Schneider and wife Louella of Riverside, Michael Schneider of Riverside, Patrick Schneider and wife Cindy of Riverside, Ann Lampe and husband Dennis of Riverside, Daniel Schneider of Riverside, and Don Schneider and wife Kristen of Mount Vernon; 24 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one brother, Robert Schneider Sr. and wife Irene of Iowa City; and one sister, Mary Ellen Alberhasky and husband Charles of Iowa City.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter-in-law, Amy Schneider; and two brothers, Melvin Schneider and wife Loretta, and Maynard Schneider and wife Mary Agnes.
