Ernest N. Lerner
Dr. Ernest N. Lerner of Mt. Pleasant died at 1:10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 1, 2000, at Henry County Health Center.
A private family memorial service will be held Friday, Nov. 3, in Forest Home Cemetery. A memorial has been established to the Mt. Pleasant Public Library. Contributions may be sent to the library, 200 North Main, Mt. Pleasant, Iowa 52641.
Dr. Lerner was born Nov. 16, 1922, at Brooklyn, N.Y., the son of Harry and Marcia Baron Lerner. He married Gloria Ray Weinberger Dec. 27, 1945. He graduated from high school in Fitzgerald, Ga., and attended Emory University in Atlanta. He graduated as a medical doctor in 1946 from Louisiana State University at New Orleans.
He served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps from 1943 to 1949, serving his internship in King?s County Hospital in Brooklyn, N.Y., in 1946 and 1947. His residency was at the Municipal Sanitarium at Otisville, N.Y. from 1949 to 1950, specializing in chest diseases. He also did a residency in Internal Medicine at the Veterans Administration Hospital at McKinney, Texas, from 1950 to 1953. He was in private practice from 1953 to 1956 in Birmingham, Ala., and was senior staff physician from 1956 to 1959 at Southwest Tampa Bay Hospital in Florida until moving to Mt. Pleasant in 1960. He was chief of medicine at the Mental Health Institute in Mt. Pleasant from October 1959 to December 1970 until he resumed private practice in Mt. Pleasant before retiring.
Survivors include his wife in Westwood; two sons, Marshall Lerner of Westville, Ohio and Leslie Lerner of Lowell; a daughter, Barbara and Robert Williams of Colorado Springs; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by a brother, Laurence Lerner.
