RIVERSIDE ? Eugene Carl Kallaus, 64, of Riverside, died Thursday, July 28, 2016, in the Palliative Care, University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City due to complications of a short-term illness.
Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 3, at the Sorden-Lewis Home for Funeral and Cremation Services in Riverside. Immediately following the visitation, military services will be held. Following the military services, a time of food and fellowship will be held, from 5:30 to 8 p.m., at the Riverside VFW Post 6414. Burial will be in the Riverside Public Cemetery at a later date. Memorials may be directed to the University of Iowa Palliative Care, Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center or the Children?s Hospital.
Mr. Kallaus was born Feb. 23, 1952, in Iowa City, the son of Carl John and Norma Lorene (Droll) Kallaus. He married Susan J. Roberts on Sept. 12, 1981, in Riverside.
He was a 1970 graduate of Highland High School. He was a farmer, served in the Air Force from July 1, 1972, to Sept. 6, 1974, during Vietnam, drove semi and Entertainer bus, and worked in housekeeping at the VA Hospital in Iowa City. He was a past commander of the VFW Post 6414 in Riverside, the American Legion, and AMVETS, and was an instructor with the Iowa Hunter Education Instructor Association. He enjoyed NASCAR, hunting, and tinkering in his shop, and was very involved with the VFW activities.
Surviving are his wife, Susan, of Riverside; one son, Erik Kallaus and wife Randi; one daughter, Jayme Kallaus; one grandson; two sisters, Linda West and husband Larry of West Chester, and Jann Frank and husband David of Riverside; one brother, Jerry Kallaus of Riverside; one sister-in-law, Diane Hodgdon and husband Dale of Cloverdale, Indiana; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his father-in-law, William Paul Roberts Sr.; and one nephew.
