Eugene Horace Steele, 93, of Riverside, Iowa, passed away on Saturday, December 10, 2022, at the St. Luke’s Transitional Care Center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Celebration of life services will be held 10:00 a.m. Saturday, December 17, 2022, at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home, with Pastor Anthony DeVaughn officiating. General calling hours will begin 2:00 p.m. Friday at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home where the family will be present to receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 Friday evening. Interment will take place at the Oregon Township Cemetery in Ainsworth, Iowa. Memorials have been established for the United Methodist Church of Washington. Eugene was born October 15, 1929, in Washington, Iowa, the son of Elmer and Crystal (Johnson) Steele. He attended Union Dale Country School prior to graduating from Washington High School in 1947. Eugene was married to Shirley Potratz from 1957 until 1966. From this marriage two sons were born, David and Dennis. Eugene later married Joy (McMillan) Turner in December of 1972.
Eugene served honorably in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. Upon his return from the service, he farmed with his dad and brother south of Riverside. He was a longtime member of the United Methodist Church in Washington. He enjoyed visits from his grandson, Clint, and enjoyed listening to him play the piano.
He is survived by son, David Steele and wife Diana of Belmont, Wisconsin; son, Dennis Steele and wife, Donna of Coralville, Iowa; grandson, Clinton Steele of Houston, Texas; stepson, Hugh Turner and wife, Melody of Algodones, New Mexico; four step-grandchildren, Hannah, Samuel, Chrissy and Leah; brother, Oscar Steele and wife, Wynne of Riverside, Iowa; and four nieces and nephews.
Eugene was preceded in death by his parents; and wife, Joy, in 2006.
