SANTA MONICA, Calif. ? Evelyn M. Hitchcock, 75, of Santa Monica, California, died Wednesday, Jan. 20, 2016, in Montrose, California.
Mrs. Hitchcock was born May 12, 1940, in Washington, the daughter of Carl Richard ?Pete? McCutchen Jr. and Elizabeth (Regan) McCutchen. She married Frederick ?Fritz? Hitchcock in 1960. The couple later divorced.
She was raised in Washington. After graduating from Washington High School, she attended Iowa State Teachers College. After her freshman year, she worked at the local paper in Iowa City, where she met her husband. After their marriage, the couple immediately moved to southern California. She received a B.A. in art and an M.A. in architectural history, both from Cal State University, Long Beach. She worked at Cal State University, Dominguez Hills for more than 20 years. Her first career was as the art gallery director, before she made the decision to move into administration. She was a respected authority on California ranch homes/adobes, active in the architectural and art scene in Santa Monica, California, presided on the Landmarks Commission for the city, and volunteered at St. Johns Hospital. She was a parishioner at St. Monica?s Catholic Church, where she also volunteered. Her passions were traveling, visiting different museums, and spending time with grandchildren.
Surviving are one daughter, Beth Hakes of La Crescenta, California; one son, Frederick ?Ted? Hitchcock of Santa Monica, California; one son-in-law, Howard Hakes; four grandchildren; and two brothers, Carl Richard ?CR? McCutchen, and Charles McCutchen.
