WINFIELD ? Everette R. ?Chinny? Sommer, 93, of Winfield, formerly of Crawfordsville, died Sunday, July 17, 2016, in Sunrise Terrace Care Center in Winfield.
The funeral service will be at 11 a.m., Wednesday, July 20, at the Honts Funeral Home in Winfield with the Rev. Mark Youngquist officiating. Burial will follow in the Crawfordsville Cemetery with military rites. Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. until service time, Wednesday at the funeral home, with the family to meet with friends. Memorials have been established for Swedesburg Evangelical Lutheran Church and Crawfordsville First Responders.
Mr. Sommer was born July 7, 1923, in Crawfordsville, the son of Jacob William and Alpha Jeanette (Bailey) Sommer. He married Phyllis June Lantz on July 10, 1942, at Wyman.
He graduated from the Crawfordsville High School in 1941. He was a farmer in the Crawfordsville area. He also worked as a hail adjuster for Farmer?s Mutual Hail Insurance Company. He drove a school bus for Crawfordsville School. He served in the Navy during World War II from 1944-46. He was stationed aboard the USS Halloran in Hawaii and the Philippine Islands, and was on his way to Okinawa, Japan, when the war ended. He served as the radar man on the ship. He was a member of the Swedesburg Evangelical Lutheran Church. He also was an active member of the American Legion for 71 years and the Masonic Lodge. He enjoyed refinishing antique furniture, working as a carpenter, collecting antique tractors, mushroom hunting, Iowa Hawkeye basketball, volunteering at the Crawfordsville American Legion Chicken Barbecue and Old Thresher?s Reunion, and going to the Epicurean with his wife and friends. He especially enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Surviving are one daughter, Cheryl and Mike Fye of West Burlington; three sons, Donald Sommer of Lake Station, Indiana, Roger and Teresa Sommer of Winfield, and James Sommer of Valparaiso, Indiana; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Irene White, and Ann Darbyshire, both of Algona; one sister-in-law, Jean Kracaw of Winfield; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, on Dec. 3, 2009; and one brother, Lyle.
