Francis 'Jack' Balk

      Francis "Jack" Balk, 81, of Washington died Sunday, June 3, 2007 in Mercy Hospital in Iowa City following declining health.

      A memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, June 16 in the Beatty Funeral Home in Washington with the Rev. Ed O'Melia officiating. The family will receive friends two hours prior to the service in the funeral home. Military honors will be performed by American Legion Post No. 29 of Washington. Mr. Balk's body has been donated to the University of Iowa Deeded Body Program. Burial will be in Glenndale Cemetery in Des Moines at a later date. A memorial fund has been established.

      Mr. Balk was born Feb. 17, 1926 in Waucoma, the son of John M. and Bathil (Huber) Balk. He married Mary Patt Abbott on Sept. 20, 1952 in St. Augustin Catholic Church in Des Moines.
