Fred O. Schmidt

      KALONA - Fred O. Schmidt, 89, of Iowa City, formerly of Kalona, died Sunday, Feb. 8, 2009, in Lantern Park Nursing and Rehab Center in Coralville, following a short illness.

      Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 11, at Zion Lutheran Church in Iowa City. Burial will be at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday in the St. John's Lutheran Cemetery in rural Kalona. Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Peterseim Funeral Home in Kalona. Memorial funds have been established for Kalona Historical Society and Zion Lutheran Church.

      Mr. Schmidt was born Jan. 8, 1920, in Iowa City, the son of Emil and Anna (Conrad) Schmidt. He married Donna Ayers on Dec. 5, 1942, in Zion Lutheran Church.
